Bringing home a new pet means taking on both the joys of spending time with your newest family member and the responsibilities of properly caring for him. Those responsibilities include providing for your pet’s changing medical needs, such as a puppy’s first shots and checkups, a pet’s spaying and neutering, an injured cat’s wounds or an older dog’s aches and pains. Your veterinarian bills can get costly over the years. That’s why it makes sense to invest in a policy through a company such as Embrace Pet Insurance.
About Embrace Pet Insurance
Launched in July 2003, Embrace Pet Insurance is an online insurance agency headquartered in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, that specializes in pet health insurance for cats, dogs and goldfish in the United States. The company also is an active philanthropist, giving back to the community by donating $2 for every insurance policy to a pet-related charity and helping shelters with both money and volunteer service.
Types of pets covered
The policies cover cats, dogs and goldfish.

How it works
Embrace policyholders can take their pets to any veterinarian, including specialists. They do not need referrals. They can also use any veterinary hospital. There is no network of required providers. The company bases its reimbursements on a percentage of the client’s actual veterinary bill, rather than using a predetermined schedule of benefit amounts. Embrace also speeds up the reimbursement process by depositing payments directly into policyholders’ bank accounts.
Types of plans
The full coverage plan covers all accidents and illnesses, with the exception of pre-existing conditions. You choose the level of coverage, with annual maximum payouts available at $5,000* to $15,000*. The lifetime coverage is up to $50,000*. The plan includes:
• Diagnostic testing and imaging.
• Surgery, hospitalization and nursing care.
• Alternative therapies and rehabilitation, including chiropractic, acupuncture, orthopedic manipulation and massage therapy.
• Emergency and specialist care.
• Veterinary exam fees.
• Breed-specific conditions. These are caused by genetic defects that run in families or types of breeds. Examples include hip dysplasia, prevalent in large dogs and seen in some smaller dogs and cats. It causes problems with the hip joint that make the femur align poorly with the hip socket. The animal eventually develops painful osteoarthritis. Surgery can prevent this condition. Some dogs eventually need hip replacement surgery. Another breed-specific condition is patellar luxation, in which the kneecap becomes dislocated, leading to pain and instability when standing. Some dogs eventually develop arthritis. Patellar luxation is common in small dogs. Embrace insurance helps pay for surgeries to treat these and other genetic conditions.
• Cancer. Veterinary services today can treat cancer in dogs and cats with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, all of which can be very expensive. Embrace pays up to the maximum yearly benefit amount.
• Chronic conditions that occur after your policy’s waiting period. Chronic conditions are those that persist for several months or years, such as diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, epilepsy, asthma and cat herpes.
The partial coverage plans cover specific care such as:
• Accident coverage. This covers treatment for bloat, foreign body ingestion, being hit by a car, torn cruciate ligament, poisoning, cuts and lacerations. After you pay the $100* deductible each year, the plan pays 90 percent of your bills for up to $5,000* annually.
• Wellness coverage for routine care. This provides an allowance for wellness exams; vaccinations; spaying/neutering; and flea, tick and heartworm medicine. You pay $149* a year and get a $200* allowance for basic wellness coverage. There is no deductible.
• Dental coverage for dental care. This provides an allowance for dental treatment such as teeth cleaning; checkups; X-rays; blood-testing, antibiotics and anesthesia for surgery; crowns and fillings. You pay $299* a year for an annual $400* allowance. There is no deductible.
• Catastrophic coverage offers a low premium when you
choose a high deductible of $500* or $1,000* annually.
The goldfish coverage includes:
• Premiums that range from $2* to $56* monthly, depending on your fish’s age, location and breed.
• Coverage for genetic conditions such as swim bladder and telescopic eye problems.
• Payment for treatments such as antibiotics for dropsy and amputation surgery for fin rot.
